Atlantic City Casinos Force Out Low-Spending Players

While casinos in Las Vegas are looking to attract all of the players they can, Atlantic City is taking a different approach. Despite the squeeze of the global recession, Atlantic City is looking to eliminate its low-end player based and instead focus on those that spend a bit more money.

About 26.6 people visited the Northwestern gambling capital of Atlantic City last year, which represents a 6.2% decline in tourism. Studies also found that those showing up to Atlantic City casinos are higher-spending players – the type of tourists that Atlantic City has been trying to attract over the past couple of years. Although there are fewer customers in Atlantic City casinos, they are the kind of players that spend more money, so the profits balance out in the end.

Low-end players often come into the city on bus tours, a trend which has declined over the past year. Over 85% of visitors to Atlantic City arrived by car while only 15% took a bus. The bus population represents a steep decline of 13%, and shows that Atlantic City is on the right track if it wants to become a high-end gambling destination.

These players have redirected their business to regional casinos in New York, Connecticut and Delaware, as casinos like the Borgata and Trump Plaza cater to players who are looking to spend more cash.
